This example is a reproduction of a Roseville Pottery five section fan style vase from the 1940's. The vase is marked with the Roseville name and numbers. Although in most instances a mark is not the recommended first step for pottery or porcelain identification, in this case it helps to know the company name "Roseville" without "USA" was used on their pottery only between 1932-1937. Since the Foxglove pattern did not enter production until 1942, "USA" should be in the vacant area between the pottery's name and the mold number. The reason a gap is there instead is because imports from another country, in this case China, cannot legally be imported bearing marks suggesting manufacture occurred in the United States (USA). Although an authentic Roseville 47-8 Foxglove pottery vase may have been used to create the mold for this item, the 'USA' part of the mark was removed from the mold before copies were made to comply with customs regulations.
For comparison purposes we've included pictures in this listing of an original example of the same vase. Note how flat and uninviting the glaze colors are on the reproduction example. Coloration is thick and opaque and there is no careful shading between colors to blend them nicely with one another. The heavy clay body of the reproduction is dead white, as seen on the base, where glazing is absent. Compare its color to the buff color clay of the vintage Roseville piece. Careful examination reveals poor definition on the modern vase. Flower petals and leaves lack proper detail and the glazing is sloppy, there is also over-spray and exchanges of color where none should be present.
Although unlikely to fool the veteran buyer, a novice may not immediately spot the differences in quality and might buy this reproduction as 'authentic' because they are guided only by the spurious application of the Roseville name. All too often too much is paid because a buyer thought they were buying a vintage pottery vase. Meanwhile, boatloads of false Roseville articles continue to be available for a very nominal price from reproduction wholesale sources.
