This example is a reproduction glass lamp. Despite it being listed in a category that suggests age it is not actually old. Both the shade and base have a frosted surface and acid-etched design of oak leaves in relief. Both lamp sections are also marked with identical stylized signatures suggestive of the famous name and mark of, 'Gallé.' But this is not an authentic Gallé-made cameo glass lamp. Don't be fooled by the signature you see, this is a current production piece.
Real Galle glass stopped being made many years ago. This piece is modern. New collectors who do not yet know of the many falsely marked art glass items on the market today, and to beware of them, may make the unfortunate mistake of paying too much for something like this, believing such items to be originals. They may come to that conclusion because of an obvious decorative appeal the items may have. But usually it is the presence of the Gallé' name and perhaps a very attractive price that encourages a purchase.
If interested in buying a lamp like this for decorative purposes, keep in mind that attractive new pieces typically may be had at very low cost direct from their modern manufacturers. So don't pay too much to own one. Remember, too, that most original examples of high-end Gallé art glass lamps are already situated in advanced collections or museums. It is highly unlikely an authentic Gallé cameo glass lamp of similar size and shape to the one in this listing will ever be offered for sale by a willing seller for only a few hundred dollars.
There are certain characteristics which can help to authenticate glass marked with the Gallé name. If an oddly low price is not enough to immediately tip you off, be on the alert for heavy glass bodies, a marked lack of refinement or poor quality etching in the decorative designs. Authentic pieces feel delicate to the touch and will be perfectly balanced. Originals were masterfully decorated and very finely made.
Measures approximately 17 1/2 inches tall with shade in place; 5 1/2 inches wide at the base. The shade is about 8 inches wide and about 6 inches tall.
