This example is a reproduction that may often seem a great vintage find for a low price. Roseville wall pockets are highly desirable and this piece is marked on the back, "Roseville 1284-8". But, even so, it is not an authentic Roseville Pottery item.
One of the biggest clues to this piece being a modern reproduction is its lack of definition. A comparison between details on just the handles, alone, highlight the differences between real vs reproduction examples. Images of authentic pieces are easily found in reference books and also online. Compare the fine detail on an original handle to the look of the handles in this listing. And consider the way the reverse side of this piece looks in comparison to the reverse of a known authentic piece. They are completely different. The hole for hanging is one specific detail that differs, but there are others.
There is no careful shading of secondary colors in the glaze effects on this piece. They should blend nicely with one another, as was done on carefully produced Roseville originals. Be sure to note the black over-spray that can be seen on the top on back. Definitely a sign of modern production methods. The flower and its leaves lack proper detail and the glazing is sloppy, there is over-spray and exchanges of colors where none should be present.
The thick clay body of this item is wrong. Clay color can be noted on the back, where glazing is absent. Vintage Roseville pottery was made of a cream to buff color clay.
Although such a poorly made piece as this is highly unlikely to fool the veteran buyer, a novice may not immediately spot the difference in quality and might buy a piece like this as 'authentic' because they are guided only by the spurious application of the Roseville name. And often, they will pay too much because they thought they were buying vintage pottery. False Roseville articles are available for a very nominal price from reproduction wholesale sources.
