This example is a fake Limoges oyster plate. Decorated with dainty pink flowers on a white background with gold trim this plate can even actually hold oysters, but it was not actually made for table service. And it was not made in Limoges, France. In contemporary times the prices being paid for antique oyster plates have steadily risen. Oyster plates are a type of specialty dinnerware. They were not always and automatically included with a set of dishes. Some were special order items. An oyster plate in a collection today may even be decorated in a way that is entirely unique to the set of which it was originally a part. Plates made to be used only for serving oysters were not particularly common, even when they were originally popular long ago. So, if made by one of the past makers of better quality ceramics an example can be extremely appealing to a modern collector. Because of this, many new fakes, reproductions and fantasy pieces have been appearing in the last few years. They are all intended to appeal specifically to oyster plate collectors (and their wallets) .
The plate illustrated in this listing is typical of new oyster plate replicas. Certain characteristics should be expected for authentic Limoges. Though an item may bear a mark suggesting that it is Limoges, if actual Limoges quality points are missing that fact can help to identify the fake or reproduction as a counterfeit, regardless of the mark. For instance, always expect true Limoges porcelain to be finely made. This means the body of an article will be thinly potted and translucent. If not translucent, it is not Limoges. Visually, the item illustrated in this listing is thick and chunky and it may not even qualify to be identified as porcelain. There is no symmetry or grace evident in the applied floral decoration and the gold trim is very bright, without patina. This plate looks new - because it is new. The mark illustrated is an over-glaze mark that was so inexpertly applied that it is already showing wear. Eventually it may be gone for good (either accidentally or on purpose), so it helps to know the other features that identify this piece as a new fake.
This oyster plate was available for purchase new for only a few dollars from a wholesale source at the time of this writing.
Plate measures 8 ½ inches in diameter.
