1950s The People's Choice Pinback Button Cleo the Talking Basset

Jackie Cooper starred in The People's Choice, an NBC television sitcom from 1955 to 1958. But the real star was Bernadette, who played Cleo, a talking (usually wisecracking) basset hound.

This pin or pinback button may have been produced during a presidential campaign year (1956?) and testifies to the popularity of the show and Cleo. (The voice was that of Mary Jane Croft who was also a regular on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Our Miss Brooks, I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, and Here's Lucy. Jackie Cooper, of course, was a childhood movie star before starring in multiple popular TV sitcoms.

The popularity of the basset hound breed increased markedly with the run of the show.

The pinback is a unique piece of TV memorabilia and quite hard to find. It measures 1 3/8" and has no maker's marks on it. It is in very good condition.
