South Pacific Souvenir Outrigger Canoe

A souvenir from military service in the South Pacific during the early 1950's. Completely hand carved and natural aged patina on the bare hard wood. Has never been stained or vanished. Canoe is 14-inches long and you can see the carving marks down inside. Platform and all attached structural connections are joined with very fine twisted twine or thread, straggled pieces of which are visible in the pictures. The outrigger is supposed to join with the tiny toothpicks, but some are missing where the brittle twine has broken. Sail is in good condition and made of woven reeds. Wood seems to be balsa wood because it is so light.

Unsure if the pieces are put together properly for the picture taking. May have the sail backwards. Canoe holds two tiny oars (a third broken) and a carved baling scoop. Does need some TLC to get it all connected properly. Very nice collectible and a project for the artisan familiar with these canoes. Outrigger measures 9-inches. Sail is 9-inches tall and 6 wide. Oars are 6-1/4. Some assembly required.
