A certified appraiser has declared this tea caddy is late 19th century, silver plate over copper and the hallmark is definitely one of the Sheffield family. Very beautiful and quite intricate. Copper shows through on some of the higher relief areas where the silver plate has started to wear away from years of polishing. It wasn't unusual for silver items that were used daily or on display to be polished weekly. Nicely designed finial on the lid.
Wrapped around the sides are four wonderful rural farm scenes. On the wide front and back are a mill and a farm house with chickens in the yard. On the ends are a gardener with a rake near a small grass-roofed hut and on the other end a girl with a stick in her hand driving a cow. Trees in each scene are beautifully done.
Measures 5-3/4 inches to the top of the finial. Bottom is 5 x 3-1/2 inches. Other than the copper showing through in a few places on the figural scenes, it is in excellent condition with no dings or dents. No scratches except normal wear on the bottom. Please disregard reflections on the top and bottom edges. Excellent for display.
