Heintz Art Metal Vase With Cattails

Patent anniversary on this Heintz Art Metal Shop vase reached the 100 year mark in August 2013. The master of this bronze and sterling creation, Otto Heintz, died in 1918 and took the chemical secrets of his craft with him. Dating from what is now known as the Arts & Crafts period, Heintz art metalware made in Buffalo, NY is highly sought by collectors today. Known for its brown metal patina overlaid with sterling decorations, the company continued to produce decorative works into the 1930's and eventually became recognized as creating the best bronze ware pieces produced in this country. Heintz was also one of the few artists who stamped production numbers on each item. The number stamped on this piece is 3608A indicating from a production list that it is a single weight vase. The production list details a number of art objects including desk sets, candlesticks, match cases, bookends and trophies among others.

Temptation is almost overwhelming to polish this piece and make it bright and shiny once more. Every site online reports that this would destroy the value. Soap and water is all that has ever been recommended. And frankly, I was afraid to even try that. Measures 10-inches tall and base is 3-inches. Bottom is stamped with the familiar HAMS (Heintz Art Metal Shop) inside a triangle. "Sterling on Bronze. Pat. Aug. 27, 12." Patent date, of course, does not denote manufacture date. Still with its original patina, no washing or polishing, this beautiful piece of art metal belonged to a member of my extended family who collected antiques for many years. This is the first time it has been offered for sale.
