Preface: How I happened to create the Cheerful Cherub. I didn't really create him at all. He just came into my mind and there he stayed.
One summer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, I used to lie on the ground for hours soaking up happiness and since I was happy I wrote cheerful verse.
The little cherub smiling on the page seemed to go with the smiling verses so I used to illustrate them. The way I write the Cherub is to carry a notebook around and catch a verse here and there on the wing.
