Distinguished African American Man with Three White Slave Children -- Charley, Rebecca and Rosa

A rather unusual and ironic carte-de-visite image of three children and a rather distinguished and dignified looking black man contentedly reading together with the inscription at the foot of the image “Lerning is Wealth,” with backstamp of Chas. Paxton of New York. Printed description on the verso indicates that the proceeds from the sale of the photo “will be devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks…” Some staining along the margins affecting the shoulder of the youngest child and the "L" in Lerning -- which, ironically, is misspelled.

Some staining in the margins. Else good.
