Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company 1857: 50 Shares Stock Certificate issued for Israel Cohen and signed by Cohen at the flip side.

Size: 9,9 c 6,2 inches. Very fine condition. Signed by the president and the treasurer on the company Israel Cohen (1820-1875) was the son of Benjamin I. Cohen. He conducted an extensive stock brokerage business and was the founder of the Second Baltimore Stock Board. He furthermore was a member of the Mechanical Fire Co. the Ringgold Infantry and Director of the Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railway.

His father Benjamin I. Cohen (1797-1845) was one of the foremost bankers in Baltimore. He was a member of the banking firm of Jacob I. Cohen Jr., and Brothers, and was influential in forming the first Baltimore Stock Board in 1838. Benjamin I. Cohen was active in creating sentiment for the passage of the new Bill and urged members of the House of Delegates to introduce a bill to extend to persons of the Jewish Religion, the same civil privileges that are allowed to other religious sects.
