Old photo of Professor FrantiSek Bhounek who survived the carsh of airship Italia during a North Pole expedition 1928. The Airship Italia was a semi-rigid airship used by Umberto Nobile in his second series of flights around the North Pole.
Size: 9,5 x 12 inches. Many pinholes at the margins at corners of the photo – not affecting the actual photo.
FrantiSek Bhounek (1898 Prague – 1973) was a Czech scientist (radiologist), explorer and writer.
Bhounek studied physics and mathematics at Charles University, later radiology in France at Marie Curie-Skodowska. In 1920s, he was one of the founders of State Radiological Institute. In 1926, he took part in an expedition of Roald Amundsen to the North Pole with airship Norge. In 1928, as an expert on cosmic rays, he was a member of crew of airship Italia led by Umberto Nobile. He survived its crash and later described it in book Troseníci na ke ledové (1928).
