Made in Czechoslovakia ca 1925 – 1938, this black perfume bottle comes with its original faceted stopper and is attributed to Heinrich Hoffman. The opaque objet de vertu features an ornamental ormolu collar with a green jadeite, faux jade or jade chevron focal point. The gold toned collar has a floral and scroll filigree design that echoes earlier Art Nouveau motifs. Juxtaposed against the ebony streamlined geometric art glass it produces a simple, elegant effect.*
The bottle base has an authentic oval " Made in Czechoslovakia " label. Several Czechoslovakian artists, factories and cottage finishers were associated with Heinrich Hoffmann (1875 - 1939) and his son-in law Henry Günther Schlevogt (1904 – 1984). Most jewels that adorned their vanity items were manufactured in Gablonz; the bejeweled bronze mountings were usually completed in Austria. In the Art Deco era, their crystal bottles were typically sold in Paris and as exports sans parfum. If this collectible container once held perfume, the scent no longer lingers.
With the octagonal stopper, it is about 3" tall and 1 ¾" wide. The dainty bottle is in excellent vintage condition, with minor wear and manufacturing variations. No chips or cracks are noted on the body; the back of the rim has a few nicks and the collar has a light patina. The glass pieces were blown into a mold and hand finished. The bottle has a polished pontil on the base and the stopper end, which appears designed to serve as a dauber has a polished stub.
A timeless treasure, the dainty work of decorative art would make a romantic gift and a wonderful vanity or bottle collection addition!
* The bottle is probably French Jet or another type of glass or crystal that has a mineral such as chalcedony (black onyx) or an organic substance like black coral added to it to produce the opaque color. Since the onyx is one of August's birthstone, this collectible container would make a thoughtful August birthday gift.
