This decorative box and lid features a whimsical harlequin design that incorporates floral and other plant-inspired motifs, reflecting residual Art Nouveau sensibilities and evoking impressions of commedia dell'arte, court jesters and playing cards. The colorful covered container has raised moriage flowers upon a creamy robin eggshell blue background, with black and white details and gilded gold trim.

SIZE: the winsome collectible is about 6.25" in diameter and 4" to the top of the finial on its cover.
CONDITION: the lovely lidded collectible is in excellent vintage condition (no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs).
COLORS: gold and black trim, blue background; the flowers are rich enameled shades of pink rose, blue, red, orange peach, purple, black and white with green and brown leaves.
MARK: Noritake dark red (magenta) M in wreath Handpainted, Made in Japan mark, registered in 1918 by Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. (DHS #27.3) and used form the late Art Nouveau period throughout the Art Deco era.
ORIGIN: early 20th Century, made in Japan (MIJ) - of Japanese derivation, most old Noritake collectibles were designed in the USA at the Morimura Brothers Trading Company in New York City, then produced and hand painted at the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. ("the Company that makes Japan's Finest China") factory in Noritake for export to Western markets.
