This antique brooch is an early piece by Norwegian silversmith Jakob Tostrup. Dating to the first decade of the 1900s, it is made of 830 silver (less actual silver content than sterling, which is 925). The brooch is finished with vitreous glass (kiln-fired) enamel in a pretty shade of pale blue. The translucent enamel is applied over a guilloche textured surface.
The piece has a gold vermeil wash that accents the ornate border around the center panel. Measuring 1 5/8" 1 1/16", the brooch is in excellent condition save for some rubbing to the vermeil on the back. The brooch has a simple, early c-clasp and is signed "830S" and has Tostrup's mark of a tankard.
