Rare Vintage Aksel Holmsen Sterling Enamel Guilloche Pin Tray Arts and Crafts Norway

This elegant little pin tray (or is it an open salt cellar?) is by Aksel Holmsen of Sandefjord, Norway. Made of sterling silver with a burnished gold vermeil wash, it is finished with vitreous glass (kiln-fired) enamel in pearlescent white, applied over a fine guilloche (engine-turned) pattern. It is accented with a hand-painted design in cobalt blue and a bronze shade of brown, with a pretty geometric pattern at the bottom and a dainty border near the top. The style of pattern looks like it would have been popular in the 1930s, so early in Holmsen's business.

Measuring 2 13/16" diameter by 5/8" tall, the piece is in excellent condition; the bottom of the bowl has a burnished patina that resembles the bronze color of the inside design, but could probably be cleaned up a bit. The enamel is in perfect condition. The base is marked "925S" along with Holmsen's overlapping pliers mark. This is the first such piece that I have seen by Holmsen in over ten years of collecting.
