This large brooch is by Aksel Holmsen of Sandefjord, Norway. Made of sterling silver with a gold vermeil wash, it is finished with vitreous glass (kiln-fired) enamel over a guilloche textured surface. The piece features a marvelous hand-painted rendering of a majestic polar bear navigating its way across some ice floes. The image is much more detailed than what one normally sees in such pieces.
The brooch has gorgeous, subtle shades of blue ranging from deep cobalt to medium sky blue, along with white, with some accents in dark gray for outlines and facial features of the bear.
Measuring 2" diameter, the brooch is in excellent condition, with no damage to the enamel. The gold wash has a lovely, burnished patina. The back of the brooch has a simple c-clasp and is signed "925S" along with Holmsen's overlapping pliers maker's mark.
