Rare Antiquarian Book: Germany - The Welding of a World Power, by Wolf von Schierbrand, 1902

Published by Doubleday, Page & Company, New York, in 1902, this hardcover book details the political machinations of pre-World War Germany, the Kaiser, the Socialist movement, and more. It provides a fascinating snapshot in time of forces that would come to shape the events of the coming decades. Also discussed are German powerhouse industries Siemens and Krupp, at the time simply major employers and manufacturers but which would later become instrumental in Hitler's war efforts, both supporting the nazification of the country as well as taking advantage of workers supplied by the concentration camps.

The book is bound in dark red fabric, with faded gold lettering on the spine and a wonderful gold imprint of the old German eagle crest on the front. It is inscribed "Van from Mark Xmas 1902." The pages have rough deckle edges that give the heavy cream paper a wonderful tactile property. There is minor darkening of the paper, not enough to be called yellowing; it is merely evidence of the book's age. Aside from occasional spots on the cover, the book is in very good condition.
