This fabulous antiquarian reference set is in the Arts and Crafts tradition of the turn of the last century/Edwardian era. It features eight volumes of rich, brown leather-bound (spine and corners) books with natural linen buckram covers. The Practical History of the World is part of the Dixon-Hanson Company of Chicago's "Home Studies Series," and the set is loaded with historical information in digest form, with beautiful, full-color plates suitable for framing, as well as charming black-and-white ink drawing illustrations. The volumes are wonderful examples of applied art of the early 20th century.

The condition is very good to excellent, with the smooth, cream-colored paper showing little evidence of yellowing, and no foxing. The color plates are protected with transparent sheets of glassine (similar to tracing paper), and there are numerous fold-out maps in delicately tinted colors. Each volume has a beautiful marble edging in blue-green, a hand-applied technique seen only in the highest-quality old books.

The set displays very well, and has been part of a collection of Arts and Crafts books that is now being dissolved from a family member's home in La Jolla, California (see other listings).
