This fantastic antique brooch is by Magnus Aase of Bergen, Norway. Made of 830 silver, the old Scandinavian standard, it is in the evocative "dragestil" tradition. "Dragon style" was one branch of the Nordic arts and crafts movement, popularized by a benign form of nationalism that arose in Europe around the 1880s.
The brooch is a depiction of a Viking warrior slaying a dragon, possibly an adaptation of the St. George story. The piece is round with a scalloped edge, and brings the image into sharp relief with the use of empty spaces (cutouts). It is one of Aase's early, handcrafted pieces. The back has a simple c-clasp and is signed "830S" along with Aase's stylized, overlapping "MA" initials and the seven dots representing Bergen.
Measuring 1 7/8" diameter, this large brooch is in excellent condition, with its original, dark, burnished patina intact.
