This is one of the prettiest Edwardian Evening Bag / Purse's I have seen, the celluloid top is a gorgeous shape and decorated to the front with lots of sparkling rhinestones set within an applied gold design of little leaves, the black celluloid plastic has a high sheen and minimal scratching, the ones that are there are superficial and don't affect the glossy look, they are only visible when looking through an eye loupe. The fastening is a fold over catch decorated with clear rhinestones, pivoting on a little brass pin, there are two open V shapes on the shoulders which each hold a circular ring to which the purse handle is attached, the little rings have no joins in them, they are entirely original to the purse, nothing has been added or changed, the purse is completely original to the day it was made.
The black fabric has a thin silver thread running through the weave, the fabric looks to be a silk blend and is still very strong, no holes anywhere, at the back of the purse where it is sewn to the frame, there are three tiny places where the top of the fabric has 'fallen down' slightly from under the purse frame, they don't affect the strength of the fabric or the way the fabric is attached at the top. The fabric has been attached by hand with heavy cotton thread and the pin tuck decoration on the purse fabric has been hand done, the V's above the pin tucking have been machine sewed, the handle of the purse is hand sewn. The inside is lines with pretty orange silk, the fabric has frayed over the years, but the silk has been attached with the weave going downwards and the fraying is in lines downwards, nothing going across, it has been attached to off white cotton and the purse could still be used with the lining as it is, (it looks a little like the frayed part around the edge of silk shawls). There is a pocket inside and also a little mirror attached to the inside which is covered with the orange silk fabric to one side. The edges of the fabric, around the top near the opening have been nicely ruched. The purse is a wonderful find for the collector and there is no reason why is cannot be used for a special occasion, what a statement! The width of the celluloid top is 6 1/8" and the fabric part below is wider, the length of the purse from the top of the clasp to the base is 8 3/4" and the entire length when holding the handle is 14". The depth of the frame is 5/8".
