Wonderful antique original framed under glass chalk painting measuring 30-1/2" long by 16-1/2" deep. Featuring a beautiful ART DECO painted wood frame with raised gesso corner decoration, border is finished in a sponged or mottled paint to mimic burl wood - color is dark, muted brown and gold.
Painting is absolutely stunning, depicting a small open tent or lean-to by the side of a lake - a full moon against a hazy sky accents the mountain in the distance. Titled A CAMPFIRE SCENE, it is signed CHANDLER for William Henry Chandler (1854-1928), an artist specifically known for his "pastel" creations. Done with beautiful attention to detail, Chandler has perfectly captured the back-lighting of the campfire - you can almost "feel" the serenity and isolation of the man alone in the wilderness.
Condition is very nice with no chips, cracks, hairlines, repairs or damage to the frame other than light age related scuffing and wear. The painting is gorgeous with no damage - there may be a dot of excess chalk transfer on the reverse of the glass, but I did not open this up to check - any white spots are the result of flash. The original dust cover was missing and another glued onto the back as a replacement - it was brittle and came apart, so I removed it which exposed the artist's label on the back - a bit difficult to read. There is a minute scrap of the original dust cover stuck within underneath the glass on the extreme top edge - the fine specks on the upper right corner of the glass have been removed.
Large, stunning and dramatic, this is just a gorgeous old chalk pastel. Lovely addition to any collection or display! Artwork images taken with and without flash to bring out the detail.
