This is a Mughal miniature painting of the Emperor Aurangzeb, possibly made in the Deccan in the 17th /18th Century. Aurangzeb lived to be 88 years old and later pictures of him show him as an old man, stooped at the shoulders. This painting shows him as a middle aged man with a white beard, standing tall.
The painting is a gouache on paper with gold highlights. It measures 8 x 6 inches without the matting. The oval measures 4.25 x 3.25 inches.
The colors are bright and vibrant and the painting shows the Emperor wearing a simple robe and a pearl necklace. His turban has a single plume of feathers.
There is a note on the paper backing from a previous owner that reads: "18th Century Persian miniature. Portrait of Aurangzeb (1618 -1707), Mogul Emperor of Islamic India. Gift of Jamil, Lahore, West Pakistan. Valuable"
