This Anglo Indian wooden jewelry box is overlaid with sadeli and a carved central panel of the Taj Mahal on the lid. It is lined with ivory and sadeli. The box is sarcophagus shaped and the sides are carved with animals and leaves. The interior of the hinged lid is fitted with a rope lined mirror. The interior is fitted with a detachable velvet lined tray made of sandalwood. The tray is divided into three compartments, for a necklace, earrings, and possibly cufflinks. The tray conceals a velvet lined space for bangles and bracelets. The box stands on four silvered brass lions head feet.
The box comes with its two original working keys.
The box measures 11.5 x 8.5 inches across the base. Including the feet the box is almost 5 inches tall.
The box is in very good condition overall. The central panel with the Taj Mahal is lifting slightly. There are a couple of very minor spots where the sadeli is missing. You have to look hard to find these.
There are a number of boxes with similar characteristics described in Amin Jaffer's 'Furniture from British India and Ceylon'.
