Although we have seen some nice examples of these miniature French enameled vases, we have never seen one with a guilloche background such as this one.
The vase features a colonial gentleman, posing for an admiring young lady. Does she like the look? Or will she disregard him as being a bit... well, foppish? He holds his tricorner hat in one hand and his other rests on his hip. This artist took care with this painting – just take a look at that romantic and detailed face! His clothes were enameled over foil to add shine and wealth to his appearance.
Nineteenth century bling! The background is an impressionistic woodland scene. The really special part of this vase is the white guilloche that appears around the painting – and even more, the lacy guilloche design around the bottom part of the vase. We have never seen an enameled vase that used this technique and the designs that grace this one. The top rim and base, both of which were added to the vase, appear to be brass.
SIZE: The vase measures 3 3/4" high. At its widest it measures about 2" in diameter, while the top rim has a diameter of 1".
CONDITION: The condition of this vase is excellent. The colors are rich and bright. We see no cracks or other problems at all in the enamel. There are no dents in the metal.
Although small, both the painting and the wonderful guilloche on this vase packs a large punch. It would make a great addition to a variety of different collections – or as a stand alone beauty.
