A paint decorated Toleware ( Tin ) Tea Caddy, dating from the middle of the 19th Century. The oval, lidded tea canister is decorated in 3 colors: red, yellow and green and a very significant portion of the paint decoration remains. The caddy retains its original lid (decorated to match the shoulders of the caddy. It is 4 ¼" tall and the oval base is 3 3/8" x 2 5/8". Condition is fine or better: as noted, most of the crusty paint decoration remains (colors are strong), with most of the paint loss confined to rubbed spots in the plain black area toward the bottom and wear to the lid and shoulder. The lid is original to the piece and fits snugly. There are no cracks, breaks or holes in the piece and the only dent is a small one on the top edge of the lid. The inside is clean and it could be used to store tea
I believe the paint decoration to be from Maine, not Pennsylvania. Vintage tole tea caddies are very scarce and this one is a nice example.
