A late 19th Century cast iron Gate Post Finial (or Topper) in the form of a perched eagle. Extremely heavy (it weighs 8 pounds), the eagle retains traces of the original paint, as well as traces of what might have been red over-paint, or splash from when its gate was painted red. 9" tall with a base approximately 4 ¾" x 3 ½". Articulated wings, hollow eyes and a wonderful presence. These gate post finials have become rather hard to find, and yes, it would make a wonderful door stop!
