Decorated Red Toleware Sugar Box, c. 1840
A mid-19th Century Decorated Red Toleware Sugar Box. Red background with yellow flowers and swags – both on the sides of the box and on the lid. Approx. 3 ¾" to the top of the finial, 4 ¼" diameter at the top; tapered base is 3 ¼" diameter. Lid is original and fits snugly; top edge (both on the box and the lid) are wrapped around wire. What you see is what you get: significant rubbing and paint loss, especially on the lid, but there is still plenty of red left. No areas or rust, and no splits or breaks in the tin, just some minor bumping. Period tole hollowware, and especially red painted hollowware from the 19th Century is extremely desirable, and this box is a lot more affordable than most you will find.
