Minton Majolica Pigeon-pie Tureen. Minton Date code for 1872 - Spectacular Antique Majolica

The bowl is 9 3/8" across and the overall width is 12 3/4". The height is 5 1/2"

Fantailed pigeons sitting on oak branches support the "wicker basket" from which pigeon pie would be served. This design came with a cover adorned with a white pigeon finial. See Karmason/Stacke p 47. Generally priced at $15,000 - 18,000. The tureen offered here has no lid, which is reflected in my asking price, it was purchased this way. It makes for a stunning center bowl!! It seems that the tureen was sold with or without lid at time of production. There is absolutely no evidence that the piece here ever had a lid. No wear or rubbing to the rim. The typical Minton colors are clear, the glaze shiny & unblemished. Very faint crazing is visible on close inspection on the bowls interior. It looks Mint but it appears that there has been a professional repair to 1 of the branches underneath 1 pigeon. Not noticeable unless pointed out. Fully marked.
