Antique Sailors Photo - 1898 Crew of the H.M.S. Crescent - Canadian Battleship / Royal Navy

9.25" x 7.25" not counting the mount

A fine early studio shot showing the handsome crew of the "Crescent" which was the Flagship of the NAWI station (North America and West Indies Station (UK Royal Navy). She was build by the Portsmouth Dockyard and launched Oct. 30/1892. Although obsolete by 1914 she saw extensive service in the 1st World War. Sold in 1921. The image comes in its original frame which a previous owner "re gilded" using gild from a jar. The glass is also original having the typical bubbles. The cardboard mount is intact but has seen better days. It measures 12.5" x 10.5". The title is written in ink. No photographer's name is present.

The image itself is in great condition. No scratches or wear. The line that can be seen running across the lower part is part of the negative, not damage that occurred later. The focus is somewhat uneven with the sharpest faces being 3 sailors in the back row. They were the only ones that didn't move an inch. The ship's name is clearly readable on all the hats. Overall very good. The light is also not consistent which could be due to sky lights in the studio. I don't think it represents fading. A very nice example of Royal Navy History.

Canadians will pay applicable taxes.

Shipping to anywhere in North America is $28, less if the frame & glass is not wanted.
