Background information on the game of piquet is given elsewhere (see, T0000403), and is not repeated here.
Interesting pair of circular piquet counters/markers, made of painted wood (one black, one gold), with embossed numbers around the circumference, and attractive brass arrows like the hands of a clock that point to the score. The initials "E.G" are embossed beneath the arrows, and may be a reference to the the maker. [The counters are also embossed "Bte," in French a patent reference] The dating of the markers is very approximate, based in part upon the materials used, and in part upon the fact that piquet declined in popularity during the first quarter of the 20th century. The counters are approximately 2.7" in diameter.
The counters are in very good condition. The paint is almost entirely intact and the arrows function extremely well. On the black marker at the number 1 there is a slight indentation, that does not impact the paint, and at the number 3 there is a slight scratch that does.
