USPC Congress 606 Playing Cards, Russell & Morgan, Gilbert Stuart's Martha Washington Matching Joker c.1901

Wonderful, rare deck of Congress 606 playing cards, made by United States Playing Card Co., at Russell & Morgan Factories, c.1901. The Ace of Spades used in this deck is said by Dawson/Hochman to be "[t]he earliest USPC, Russell & Morgan Factories Ace of Spades." The backs are from the famous painting of Martha Washington by Gilbert Stuart in the collection of the National Gallery, and the Joker is a matching Joker, matching the backs, and with the name Martha Washington at the bottom.

The deck has 52 cards, plus the Joker noted. The cards are wide, measuring 90mm x 63mm, with gold gilt around. The come in the original telescope type box.

The cards are in very good used condition, with most of the gold gilt remaining. The faces of a number of the cards have a slight "indentation," parallel to the edges, akin to a kind of interior border. This can be seen on the Ace of Spades and several other cards shown. A representative sample of the backs is also shown. The box is in good condition but with the top of the outer box missing.
