Drukkerij Juten "De Kloof" Klaverjas Playing Cards, Walter Hagenaars Designs, c.1969
Wonderful non-standard Dutch cards with backs whose designs are based upon matchbook covers made by "De Kloof" of Bergen op Zoom. That is, the backs of these De Kloof playing cards mimic the look of matchbook covers that were made by De Kloof as advertising for other companies. The backs of this particular deck of cards are based upon a matchbook made for a "Wiel Verwijlen" of Heerlen, but the listing for these cards in the World Web Playing Card Museum (WWPCM #00704) makes it clear that there are sets of these cards that have other backs with a similar "look" to this deck, but showing the name and contact information of other companies. The Aces are illustrations in black of famous Dutch castles, and the court cards are completely charming original designs by an artist that the WWPCM identifies as Walter Hagennaars. The WWPCM also identifies the maker of these cards as Drukkerij Juten, and the date they were made as 1969. The cards here for sale do not indicate the date, maker or designer, and I have accepted the attributions made by the WWPCM.
I have described these cards as "Klaverjas" cards, because it is a 32-card deck, and the Dutch national game is Klaverjas, played with a 32 card deck. Obviously the deck can be used for any 32-card game. It has the same cards as a skat deck – Ace and 7 through King in each suit. The cards are small, measuring 86mm x 56mm. There is no box.
The cards are in superb "as new" condition.
Thanks for visiting.
