2 Decks Arrco (Duratone) Glamour/Pin-Up Playing Cards, $25/ea., "Josephine Bonaparte" and "Nelle Gwyn," Artist Unknown, c.1950s
Two mint decks of beautiful glamour/pin-up cards made by Arrco, its Duratone brand. Each deck has a 1 pack tax stamp dating the cards to the period 1940-1965, and from the style of the illustrations on the backs it seems to me that they date to the decade of the 1950s. The "Nelle Gwyn" deck is still sealed in its wrapper; the wrapper on the "Josephine Bonaparte" deck has come loose and is broken, but it is in mint condition. I have serious doubts that the glamorous women on the backs of the decks, with 1950s hair styles, have any physical resemblance to "Josephine Bonaparte" or "Nelle Gwyn," and frankly it seems a bit odd that the decks have these "titles." The illustrations are not signed, and I do not know the artist.
Each deck has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers. The cards are bridge size, measuring 89mm x 58mm, with gold gilt around. There are no boxes.
As noted, one deck is mint and sealed, and the cards of the open deck are mint.
Each deck is available for $25, and both are for sale together for $45.
