Anglo-Indian (Monghyr) Cribbage Board, c.1860
Gorgeous mid-19th century cribbage board from the Monghyr region of Eastern India, made of ebony wood turned, with bone/ivory inlay work for the sets of peg holes and a simple, elegant center design. It sits on four metal paw feet. At its longest and widest, the board measures approximately 9½" by 3". The "front" paw feet (i.e., at the curved end) sit lower to the surface than the "rear" feet (i.e., at the squared end), and so there is a very slight upward incline from front to rear. The board came to me with 4 bone/ivory matching pegs – 2 red, 2 white – that are not original, but are attractive and fit reasonably well; they are as suitable as anything else that I have.
The piece is in excellent condition – a beautiful piece – but a couple of things should be noted. First, there are cracks in the bone/ivory inlay at several of the sets of peg holes. Second, there have been issues with the original pins/screws that held the paw feet in place, and there are several recent replacements (note the Phillips head screws).
