Hoyle (Stancraft) "Liars Poker" Card Game, C.R. Jacob Designs, c.1961

Mint, sealed set of delightful and presumably somewhat rare cards made by Hoyle (Stancraft brand) c.1961 to play the game "Liars Poker," a playing card relative of the well known "Liar's Dice" game. The deck was designed by (is copyrighted to) C.R. Jacob. The BoardGameGeek website describes a card game called "Liars Bluff" published in 1975, with cards designed by Jacob. I am not sure that it is the same game, but the design of the cards themselves is very similar, if not the same. Other than that mention, I have not found any reference to these cards in the literature available to me. The cards come with a paper insert, describing how the cards can be used to play "Liars Poker" and 6 other games. The first 2 pictures of this listing are for the actual deck that is for sale. The remaining pictures are from an open deck previously sold in this shop.

The best way to describe this deck is to refer to the accompanying pictures. There are 52 cards, plus 2 "Liar" cards. The 52 cards consist of 4 of each denomination, i.e., 4 cards with Aces, 4 cards with Kings, etc. The difference is that – taking the Aces by way of example -- there is a card with 1 Ace, a card with 2 Aces, a card with 3 Aces, and a card with 4 Aces; the same is true for the cards of every other denomination. The designs on the court cards are a very charming and humorous variant of the Standard English pattern – different to the point that it may be more accurate to describe the cards as non-standard. As one may expect, the cards are poker size, measuring 89mm x 64mm. They come in the original box.

As noted, the cards, paper insert and box are all mint and sealed.
