Karavelle (Belgium) "SPD" ("Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands" -- Social Democratic Party of Germany) Skat Playing Cards, c.1976

Superb skat deck of cards made in Belgium for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (“SPD”) c.1976, with special Aces, and featuring the faces of the then leadership of the SPD superimposed on the court cards, including Helmut Schmidt and Willy Brandt. Fournier reports that the cards were made on the occasion of the German Bundestag elections of 1976. According to the box and the 7 of Hearts, the cards were made by a Belgian company, Karavelle, and a deck of these cards was a Lot at the 2007 Galerie Bassenge auction, in which the maker is also identified as Karavelle. Accordingly, I have identified Karavelle as the maker. However, I have not been able to find any information about a card maker by that name, and Fournier indicates that these cards were made by Carta Mundi.

The deck is a skat deck with 32 cards, plus 3 cards that identify the political leaders whose faces are on the court cards, plus an extra card (“SPD sticht”). The cards are slightly large bridge size, measuring 91mm x 60mm – a bit larger than the Carta Mundi decks of this period with which I am familiar. The cards are in the original box.

The cards and box are in excellent condition, “as new” or very nearly so.
