Lovely set of 4 “court whist” score cards, in the original box with the original pencils, presumably made and published by E.T.W. Dennis as part of its “Dainty Series,” and sold by E.J. Wildgoose, an Oldham printer and stationer. The Dennis name does not appear anywhere on the score cards or box, but the “Dainty Series” is a series of postcards and other ephemera made by E.T.W. Dennis in the early 19th century, and I assume that these cards could not be so designated unless Dennis was at least the publisher. The box has an E.J. Wildgoose sticker, and, though Wildgoose was itself a printer, I am assuming that here it was probably just a seller.
In the July 28, 1906 edition of “The Publishers Circle,” a British publishing periodical accessible over the internet, it is noted that: “Messrs. E.T.W. Dennis & Sons, Ltd., art printers and publishers, . . . have . . . a remarkably attractive ‘Dainty Series’ of wide range, besides Christmas cards and calendars, wedding cards, menus, progressive whist cards and badges, ball programmes, printers blanks, mounted views, and other alluring goods.” The “Dainty Series” of various items was published for many years, but given the reference in this 1906 article to “whist cards,” I have dated the score cards here for sale the same year as the article. This is obviously approximate.
Court whist is a variation of whist. In regular whist, the last card dealt is the trump; in court whist, the trump cards are defined by a certain order as indicated on the scoring cards, and the inside of the scoring cards here for sale show this. The score cards measure 103mm x 63mm, and feature an elegant “courtly” illustration on the front of each; there are 2 pairs of cards, with contrasting colors.
The score cards and pencils are “as new.” The box is in no better than very good condition, structurally intact, but with some soiling and other signs of wear.
Thanks for visiting.
