ASS/VSSF "Salon-Patience Nr. 185" Patience Playing Cards, c.1935

Mint deck of patience size cards made by ASS/VSSF shortly after the formation of ASS, called “Salon-Patience Nr. 185,” with beautiful “Salon-Karte” courts and Aces with scenes of Germany. It is my understanding from the World Web Playing Card Museum that the designs for these cards originated with Berliner Spielkartenfabrik Eduard Buttner & Co. c.1900 (WWPCM00321). I do not know the date of manufacture of this set, but note that the box and wrapper refer to Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkarten Fabriken AG while the 7 of Hearts has the ASS logo. What I assume is a standard size deck of these cards is shown by Fournier, and he identifies them as a VSSF deck and dates them to 1930. On balance the year 1935 seems a reasonable approximation.

The deck has 52 cards, plus 1 Joker. They are patience size, measuring 66mm x 44mm, with gold gilt at the corners. They come in a VSSF wrapper that is open at the ends, and I removed the cards from the wrapper to inspect and photograph them for this listing. The wrapper and cards are housed in the original box.

The cards are mint, removed from the wrapper for this listing as noted above. Regrettably, the wrapper is slightly wrinkled as a result of that process. The box is in excellent condition, with only very slight signs of age and wear.
