Wonderful deck of cards made by De La Rue for John Knight, Ltd., a soap manufacturer, featuring a superb Joker and an original Ace of Spades. The World of Playing Cards website – a wonderful resource – dates these cards c.1926, and I have done the same. Per Lodge, the court card designs are consistent with that date. However, the deck includes a backed insert card with contract bridge scoring, and 1926 seems early for such a card to appear in British decks. It is possible that the deck was made into the 1930s as well.
The deck has 52 cards, plus a delightful Joker, plus an Ace of Spades unique to this deck, plus a backed card showing contract bridge scoring. There is also an extra 8 of Diamonds, stamped “Sample” with a corner intentionally cut. The box has its sample card, and so I am not completely sure why the deck includes this card. The cards are bridge size, measuring 90mm x 59mm, and come in the original John Knight box.
The cards are in excellent, very lightly used condition. The box is also in excellent condition, with only slight indications of age and wear.
Thanks for visiting.
