Wonderful and fascinating small booklet published by J.A. Lowell & Co. of Boston c.1894 for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway titled inside, “The Whist Players Companion,” printed by a steel engraving technique that results in a very striking look to the images engraved. This is particularly evident in the finely detailed image of the steam locomotive on the front cover of the booklet. The beauty of the engraving is not captured in the photographs for this listing. The booklet provides the basic rules and strategy of whist, in 1894 the dominant social card game in the United States and in Great Britain.
The booklet is approximately the height and width of a deck of cards, measuring 87mm x 61mm, and is 24 pages thick. As such it would have fit easily into a vest or breast pocket of a gentleman’s suit. I imagine that in 1894 it was distributed to long distance rail passengers along with a deck of cards, and it is a beautiful window on a bygone day.
The booklet is in superb condition, extremely clean, free of foxing, wrinkles and tears. I have never seen one of these before, although they may be more common than I know. I find it hard to believe that one could have survived in better condition.
Thanks for visiting.
