Double Deck Railroad Playing Cards and Card Game, “Mainliner” (Braceridge, Ontario, Canada), Dave Morin Copyright, c.1976

Interesting and presumably rare double deck of railroad cards that is also a card game, copyrighted to a Dave Morin c.1976, featuring pictures on the card backs and faces of train cars from 4 railroads: CP Rail; B& O Railroad (Chessie Systems); Frisco Railroad (St. Louis – San Francisco Railroad); and Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF). From what is printed on the backs of each card, I believe that these cards were sold in a shop in Braceridge, Ontario, Canada that was called “Mainliner,” a shop that specialized in railroad playing cards and puzzles, etc.; however, I cannot find any other information about the shop, Mr. Morin, or these cards.

Both decks were sealed when I purchased the cards, and I have broken the seal to one of the decks for inspection and photographing here. That deck consists of 52 cards, plus 1 Joker, plus 1 card advertising the deck, plus 1 card with the rules for a game called, “Railroad.” If I am interpreting the information on the advertising insert card correctly, at the time these decks were published there were 6 card games published, with more planned, of which these decks were game #1. If you look at the backs of the cards, in the upper left hand corner of each there is a large 1, and I believe that is to identify these cards as suitable for game #1, “Railroad.” The faces of the 52 cards in the deck have pictures of 12 railroad cards, 3 pictures for each of the 4 railroads represented. Of these sets of pictures, 4 sets have 7 of each picture, while 8 sets have 3 of each picture [(4 x 7) + (8 x 3) = 52]. I have not studied the rules for the game, but I do note that points are awarded depending on the railroad cards held in one’s hand. I assume that the other (still sealed) deck is the same, but do not know for certain. The cards are bridge size, measuring 89mm x 58mm, and the decks come in what is almost certain to be the original hard plastic box.

As noted, the cards are mint, with one deck still sealed. The box is in excellent condition, although there is the remnant of a price tag on the underside.

Thanks for visiting.
