A very fine and intricate carnet de bal (dance card case) or aide mémoire. Judging by the quality of the carving, this beautiful French piece was certainly made in the port town of Dieppe, in the early to mid 19th century. Both the front and back panels are genuine elephant ivory, as is the center medallion. The interior is lined in the original red satin. The medallion was carved in the rococo style with branches and acanthus leaves, and features an Eagle standing upon a star-spangled banner. Both sides are flanked by beastly lions, carrying the banner in their mouths. This piece could perhaps be a French homage to the American Independence, as the card case dates to just after the American Revolution and features the symbolic Eagle and start-spangled banner.
Condition: Great condition. One very small piece of decoration missing to the very left side of the medallion (less than 1/8 in). Otherwise, ivory is in excellent condition. Interior fabric fittings are worn from use.
