HEAVY DIEPPE Carved Ivory Figure of Child Riding a Duck, French

What a marvelous figure! This piece was hand carved in late 19th century France, and with such fine workmanship, could very likely be a work of Dieppe (a port town in Northern France, known for its ivory carvers). The child rides atop a duck, which stands proudly erect with its chest protruding. The infant is very realistically carved, and much attention was paid to the details of human anatomy - the creases is his skin and bends in his joints. His buttocks are carved with two dimples above them. The carving is one solid piece of ivory, and is a heavy, thick cylindrical piece. Stands on a wood base. One of a kind!

Condition: Excellent! No damage or repairs.

Measurements: Total 5 3/4 in high x 3 in wide at base (14.5 cm x 7.5 cm). Ivory alone is 5 in high x 2 1/2 in wide (12.5 cm x 6.25 cm)
