A very handsome and rare table box, composed of 5 finely carved ivory plaques, in cameo relief. The piece is European and dates to the early to mid 19th century. Each plaque is securely inset into the box, which is encrusted with colorful glass jewels/rhinestones. The largest ivory plaque is made of one thick, solid piece of ivory and depicts eight cherubs passing the time with some good old wine. One sits above the barrel and makes a toast, while another cherub serves wine to the others. The other four ivory plaques depict scenes from Greek mythology, with gods, goddesses, angels, and chariots. The bronze is beautifully worked and has gained a deep patina over the years. I have left the box untouched and uncleaned. I carefully removed the larger plaque to observe it up close and can guarantee them to be genuine ivory pieces from the 19th century. A true gem for the discerning collector.
Condition: Excellent condition! No damage or repairs.
