This is a large and rare early American snuffbox, ca. 1800. The exterior is burl wood with tortoiseshell edging (4 complete circular bands that line the sides and outer lips of the top and bottom). The top is inset with a wonderful hand painted portrait miniature. It depicts a woman in period attire: a white bonnet, black dress, and belt. It is covered with its original "bubble" glass (an early type of convex glass). The interior is lined with a beautiful tortoise shell. A quality museum worthy piece!
Condition: Miniature is in excellent condition. There are a few very minor flea-size nicks to the exterior tortoiseshell edging. The interior has a normal age crack to the tortoiseshell. Very snug fit. Overall great condition.
Measurements: Box is 3 1/2 in. diameter and 1 in. high (9 cm x 2.5 cm). Miniature painting is 2 1/2 in. diameter (6.25 cm).
