Vintage 60s Priscilla of Boston Rose Pink Velvet Gown XS/S

Circa 1967 sleeveless velvet gown from Priscilla of Boston in a ravishing shade of rose pink features an empire-waisted bodice with mock-neck, over a floor-length A-line skirt lined in pellon for crisp shape. The gown closes with a back zipper, cleverly disguised beneath a row of 6 non-functional self-fabric buttons.

The gown—both in its color and its silhouette—had a precedent in the bridesmaids' gowns Priscilla designed for Luci Baines Johnson's wedding in August of 1966. Like this one, the pink moire gowns Luci chose had high, rolled necks, "molded bodices", and skirts with a "stemline" shape. Just as Luci's choice of a Watteau back to her gown set the trend for years to come, it is likely that the silhouette and color of her bridesmaid's gowns began a vogue as well.

By the mid-1960s, Priscilla Kidder (who had first opened her bridal shop in 1945) was referred to as the Dior of the bridal industry. An auxiliary member of the New York Couture Group, she was producing 2000 wedding gowns a month for young women who wanted high fashion gowns that combined the traditional with the contemporary.

Labelled "Priscilla of Boston" near the bottom of the zipper, the gown has a second label which identifies the color as "rose", as well as the surname of the customer. Measurements are: Bust 33", (empire) waist 26", hips 40", bodice length 11 ½"and overall length 53".

Excellent condition, with a 1" section along the back center seam (21" down from the waistline; photo #8) which appears to have been let out.
