Airy, featherweight vintage 1950s wicker or rattan boater or skimmer hat features a wonderful novelty weave evocative of intricate Celtic knots (or, perhaps, pretzels!) Sections of twisting, flat braid alternate with the whipstitched rattan ovals that shape the hat at the brim and base and top of the crown, while openwork rings of simple, linked loops add yet more visual interest.
Unlined, the hat has a white rayon satin ribbon inside the base of the crown, as well as an elastic band to secure it to the head. Most likely a man’s hat to begin with, and possibly a tourist item of Mexican manufacture, it makes a truly unique summer chapeau!
Measurements are: Inner circumference 23”, diameter front to back 12” and side to side 10.75”, and crown height 2.75”. Excellent condition.
Many thanks to my Vintage Fashion Guild colleagues for helping me “figure out” this unusual hat!
