Vintage 70s Betsey Johnson Alley Cat Floral Velvet Maxi Wrap Dress Gown XS

From the woman who designed velvet suits for (who else?) the Velvet Underground and used Edie Sedgwick as a fit model, here’s a vintage early 70s maxi dress or gown that manages to be rock ‘n roll as well as thoroughly romantic.

The waist-cinching wrap style has a fitted bodice with V-neck, daring plunge in back, and gently puffed sleeves with “point” over each wrist (a nod to the Renaissance?), It is fashioned of a sumptuous floral velvet that reveals Johnson’s art school background: White, marigold, crimson, and pink blooms, splashed on a deep forest green ground.

Adding to the visual interest, the neckline, hem, and wrap ties are piped in dusty rose satin, and the ties are backed in a contrast pattern floral cotton.

Labelled “Alley Cat by Betsey Johnson”, the dress is tagged a vintage size 9/10; exact measurements are: Bust 32”, shoulders 14.5”, waist 24”, hips 34”, sleeves 23” (at “point”, length is 25”) and length 49”.

Very good to excellent condition; only issue is that the velvet on the ties has pulled away from the piping in two places (photo #7) and the new owner may wish to restitch it.
