Deadstock Vintage 1930 Brown Suede & Leather Pumps
The shoes are leather-lined and soled, and a label in the sockliner of the right shoe reads "Deluxe Compo, Fashionable Footwear". I've been unable to learn precisely what "compo" refers to, but am hypothesizing that like the composition dolls of the 30s and 40s, the heels (under the celluloid covering) are made of wood pulp and glue.
Measuring 8 ¾" from toe to heel inside the shoe and 2 5/8" across the tread or ball of the sole (approximately the equivalent of a very narrow modern size 5 or 5 ½) , the shoes are in excellent condition with two tiny nicks to the left heel cap, and writing on the right sole.
NOTE: Many thanks to Jonathan Walford, founder/curator of the Fashion History Museum and author of "The Seductive Shoe: Five Centuries of Fashion Footwear", for his assistance in dating and properly identifying these shoes.
